Left Shoulder Pain

I am working with my surgeon on some left shoulder pain issues. I have been reading up a little on this phenomenon with lapbanders. There was of course the shoulder pain following surgery but this is different. Obviously I am nearly a year out from surgery, so that's obvious. Anyway, lately I have been getting what I believe to be referred pain from my diaphragm. It feels like I can't take a full breath without a stabbing pain. But if I lay down or stretch out sometimes I can get it to go away. I have read some other lapband blogs and message boards and have found others who have experienced this too. Anybody else have this? My doc's office is supposed to call back sometime today and decide what, if anything, I need to do. Otherwise, weight loss is going good, scale still reads 216 this morning which is awesome to see that number stick. Now I am just waiting for the follow up from my surgeon's office.

  1. I had that from my gallbladder before it was removed. It was pushing against my diaphram and giving me that stupid shoulder pain. I have never heard about the tubing doing that, but I guess it makes sense. I wonder if a hernia could cause that too since it rides up over the diaphram.

I hope it is nothing and it goes away soon!

  3. I heard that people who lose a lot of weight fast may need to have their gall bladder's out due to getting gall stones...

hope that is not the case though :(

  4. Interesting thoughts...never thought about the gall bladder. Might have to give that some thought too.

  5. I have it from time to time. After surgery I had very, very severe left shoulder pain that lasted for nearly a month. My surgeon didn't take my pain all that seriously because I guess it's not that common to get it so badly. After the constant pain went away, I have still had periodic pain in the shoulder. Anecdotally (is that how you spell that?) I'd say that it's caused when I get too much air in my pouch; if I drink too fast, or if I eat pudding mixed with whipped cream which is a favorite dessert of mine - that kind of thing. I'm not sure that's it, but that's my best guess.

I read somewhere - I think on Fluffy's blog - about some people getting pains in their shoulder as an early sign that they are getting full and I'm trying to go with that. Trying to see it as a positive warning sign and stop eating the second I feel it. We'll see. Good luck with yours and I look forward to hearing what your doctor tells you.

  6. I just had lap band yesterday. My shoulder hurts more than my abdomen. I sure hope it doesn't last long. I am looking forward to losing weight. Marie
